what year does this take place in?

I'm guessing sometime in the 40's but would like to know

reply

I'm guessing too, but I do believe it was supposed to be in the 40s. I think there was some mention about WWII in it. From the cars and the fashions, I'd say late 30s or early 40s.

reply

It takes place in 1946.

reply

I think the late fifties to early sixties.

Late fifties to early sixties? Did you pay any attention to the screen when you were watching this? It tells us that we are in 1946; in case you missed that very clear message, the film has a distinct post-depression feel (so it is still subdued and the color palette when they are back in the US is filled with earth-tones) -- the flamboyance associated with the fifties economic boom returns later in the 50s in the US, with pink and turquoise cars with giant "shark fins" and hula hoops and poodle skirts. That time period is not depicted in this film. The film has a post-depression, post-WWII aesthetic, subdued and melancholy, and the cars and clothing, in addition to the houses, technology, etc all clearly indicate that time period. Cars from the 1950s in the US has a very distinct look, and they are easily recognizable. And forget the 1960s! I have NO idea why you thought that the era depicted in this film was the 1960s.

When they're on the ship it tells you right on the screen that it's 1946.

"You've always been the caretaker. I should know sir, I've always been here."

reply

That explains what causes the ship to sink.

An unexploded mine from World War II.

reply

Did they have underwater mines in WWII?

reply

Of course they did, especially around Crete and other Greek and Turkish islands.

They call me the wanderer.

reply

Thanks for the info. Even so, wasn't the ship supposed to have sunk off the western coast of Africa?

In the graphic novel, which is more faithfull to the first book, Alec tells the Black Stallion that he believes that the island they're shipwrecked on is near either Spain or Portugal. It was definately the Atlantic Ocean, and nowhere near Greece.

They call me the wanderer.

In the book, Alec Ramsey lives in New York City!

reply

It would, except that in the book, the ship is struck by lightning.

reply

At the very beginning it states that it is 1946. A newspaper later in the movie is also dated 1946.
