It’s very boring. It’s kind of like the skeleton of a good IP. I like the robots, their visual design was decent. The villain was mildly interesting, everyone else was totally forgettable.
shareThat's also how I saved the movie in my memory. I can see that people like it, but definitely nothing for me. Similar to Star Trek TMP.
shareThe visuals did. I love the dusty bluish look of deep space. The main 'ghost' ship, I'm too lazy to look it up, looks incredible. It's a good cast but the acting is average. The evil red robot is really well done. But they decided to put in some silly robots that I thought were the worst part of the film, especially one that was broken down and had a southern drawl. There are noticeable wires visible during some of the weightless scenes. This was Disney's response to Star Wars and Star Wars won that battle but that doesn't mean there isn't much to like about The Black Hole. And the John Barry score is really outstanding. The ending of the film is where it goes off on a few unusual tangents that are open to interpretation.

And the cast does not inspire, minor league actors and a few older stalwarts.
The red robot Max is still quite threatening though.
But it's the ending where it really goes off the rails...the ship being bombarded with asteroids, tearing huge holes in the ship and yet the crew seemingly unaffected by the lack of oxygen. And for some unknown reason, the structure of the ship appears to turn to rubber. Bizarre.
And the finale with the journey through the black hole itself is probably the most bizarre thing Disney have ever done.

The script was the main problem. These were all capable actors. Roddy McDowell's Vincent spewing all of his aphorisms did get rather tiresome, but that's not McDowell's fault.
shareI saw it in the theaters and thought it sucked, then I watched it again maybe 20 years ago and it was actually better-than-average. Star Wars it ain't. I think this was Disney's first "PG" movie and they probably struggled with how dark they should go.

The premise of the whole movie , what happened to that ship's crew is horrific!
It's still a hot mess, but an entertaining one.
