Here's what I don't get...

From the part that comes after the pool onward... Can someone please explain to me what happens? And a little bit detail if possible? Just as long as i get it.

Do you mean the ending?

reply

Yes basically but not just the scene where she walks into her club at the very end. Even before that.

Basically, Nico tries to blackmail Vanessa's horse jockey into losing the race for the Mob. Fontaine overhears this and tells Feathers (the Mob boss) that she knows what's going on and she wants a piece of the action. He agrees. On the day of the race, Fontaine tells Nico that she has everything riding on Vanessa's horse to win the race and she will be ruined if it doesn't. Nico panics because even though he had to do the Mob's dirty work by fixing the race, he doesn't want to see Fontaine ruined. When Vanessa's jockey falls off his horse (either deliberately or by accident) Nico thinks Fontaine has lost all of her money. He, himself, has won a fortune though and enough to get himself out of debt with the Mob. He gives Fontaine his winnings to collect, but Fontaine also collects her cut from Feathers and drives off very rich with a double pay-off while the Mob sends Nico back to New York. However, there are strings attached to Fontaine's deal with Feathers, and he then turns up at her club claiming to be the new owner.

Different ending to the book.

Yes I prefer the ending to the film rather than the book as well. That shot of Joanie driving away in the Rolls with the two cheques in her hand as the theme song kicks in is wonderful.

The ending of the book was a little too "Danielle Steel" for my liking.

"Fontaine tells Nico that she has everything riding on Vanessa's horse to win the race and she will be ruined if it doesn't."

But I thought Fontaine backed the mobs horse Burtons Choice, because the female assistant of Thrush Feather says just that as Fontaine is collecting her winnings from the booth, Lynn (Pamela Salem) says "and you backed the winner as well, good days work".

reply

Yes she backed both, but she told Nico that she only backed Vanessa's horse and kept quiet about her deal with Feathers.

Thank you, moomoo2525, even though I just watched "The Bitch," I was a bit thrown for a loop, myself, at the ending. I'm thankful that YOU were paying attention! So, WHO pulled the switch on the ring, in the beginning, or was Nico just being set-up by the Mob? Is THAT point even important? Joan won money on the horse race, the Mob made money on the horse race, Vanessa's jockey took the pay-off to THROW the race and Nico gave Joan (Fontaine) his winnings. Which means Vanessa LOST? Well, Fontaine (Joan) lost, too, it seems, as London Mob Boss, "Thrush Feathers" took over The Hobo disco. By Jove, I think I GOT it, now!!! At least Nico got laid, a lot, in London!

"You can't HANDLE the truth!" Jack Nicholson, "A Few Good Men."

The ending always confused me too, and I have seen it more times than i want to admit. i think it's just a case of poor writing or editing. A film like this should not be THIS complicated to figure out!

I came here specifically to understand the ending. It WAS indeed very difficult to follow when it shouldn't have been.
