This Film Was Planned From The Start

The director of the Poseidon Adventure said in an interview that the reason he didn't show the ship sinking in the end is because of a sequel idea he had where the "rescue crew" who came to the aid of the survivors are actually a rogue salvage unit that kidnap them and interrogate them about a valuble cargo, eventually forcing them to go back into the poseidon.

Initially this idea was rejected, and a second idea for a sequel was drafted where the surviving cast gets trapped in a large tunnel collapse during an earth quake on their way to testify about the events on Poseidon and have to climb out. Needless to say this idea was also scrapped.

A few years later, they decided to go back to the original idea, but changed the cast to all new people, thinking it would be redundant to send the original cast back into the doomed ship, and Beyond The Poseidon Adventure was born.
