I just bought myself this movie, but I don't have the original yet (saw it a very long time ago, about 25 years ago or something like that), I did see the new 2006 version (which was not a great movie), and I did see the Hallmark miniserie version (which was much better).. Now my question is, do I have to watch the original version first before watching this one?
Only if you want to reinforce how bad this movie is-and I mean as far as continuity with the original. Watch it-digest and then maybe watch the 1972 original.
Actually, I saw this one first as a child. It was on constant rotation on network TV. I didn't even know there was a previous film before I saw this. Years later, I always thought that it had a great premise: An upside-down ship filled with treasures and survivors trying to get out. I often wondered how a previous film could be any better... Then I saw the original 1972 film. It is far superior in almost every way, except for a few points. The armed 'bad guys' and the hunt for riches was still an exciting plot point. However, where the rescue of survivors seems like a footnote in BTPA, it is paramount to the original. The '72 film is like a great symphony. It starts out calm, all hell breaks loose, and finally we get hooked, never letting go until the thrilling climax. I personally think it was probably good that you saw BTPA first. Not only will it make you appreciate the first one, it also serves as a prologue to the events seen in the original.
In order to be completely happy and satisfied with the whole Poseidon franchise. Watch the original and only the original from now on. Forget about the crappy sequel and the semi retarded remakes and focus only upon the original master piece. Nothing could possibly be any better than this. James Cameron could try but will fail. He may turn Poseidon into a love story or something like that. Don't get me wrong, I loved Titanic but, Poseidon is an adventure all it's own and nothing will top it. 1972 for real. <3
