cut? or was that europa europa?

i just got the dvd of this classic, having seen it in the early 80s. i could have sworn there was a scene in which the green recruits are marching with cat on the front their first day. artillery shells whistle overhead and the rookies panic. the sgt then proceeds to tell them about the various shells and their noises... oh you dont ever have to duck for 'whiirrrrr' but 'zzzzzt' will kill you every time..etc. then the barrage begins in earnest and they scramble off the road.

when i played the dvd all they show is the barrage and the scrambling. the whole "lesson" is missing. was it this movie or did i confuse it with europa europa... or some other film?
