Did Paul have to die?
What do ya think? Did Paul Baumer have to die to establish closure to the story?

shareThat is a good question my friend....I think they could have ended it by, ohh crap I can't think of anything! With such a Powerful ending It's hard to think of anything at all. Sorry'
shareYes, I think it was a good ending. He was doing something he liked, so I think he died happy. All of his friends were dead, and he had no reason to stay in the war. He hated it, and he didn't really want to return home. I think it was good that he died, as much as I didn't want him to.
shareThat's sad. Breaking his poor mothers heart! he could of lived a peaceful life in Dusseldorf or silesia...maybe with a family. I suppode it was a good ending though?
Don't Mess With Germany
Escuse me i am watching in school and we didnt finish it how does paul die we left on where kat dies.
This ain't no Brokeback Mountain, I'm a real cowboy.
Believe me, I don't think you want us to tell you. I watched it in school a few weeks ago and none of us expected Paul to die, and when he did it was a real shock - like "woah! what just happened!" I think you'll appreciate it more if you just wait and see :)
shareum we dont have anymore time to watch it that is as far we got.

I think the whole point of the story, going back to the original novel, was to bring you in to the world of this main character. Get to know him. See what he sees, know what he knows. Then when he dies at the end, the official High Command lists the day as 'All Quiet...', meaning 'Nothing happened today.' Thus it illustrates the pointless waste of human life that was The Great War.
So yeah, he had to die.
this book was writen by a vet of wwI its a protest of the war and of its innocence's lost. Its a truth found in all war even with great advancements from the war such as medical and tech.

I read the book for my German class and although the book was written by a WWI vet, it wasn't a protest. Before the first chapter, there's a chapter 0. It says that "this book has no intention of being an accusation or a confession. It just wants to try to tell about a generation that was destroyed by the war, even when people had managed to avoid the grenades."
shareThe intro was added AFTER Erich Maria Remarque (the author for those who don't know) was almost killed by Hitler, all copies burned, and everyone who was in possession of the book sent to concentration camps. It was INTENDED TO BE an ANTI-WAR novel.
sharePaul didn't have to die...that is the point of the story!
The author killed Paul off to make it more hard-hitting. It also felt more realistic; Paul wasn't an immortal hero.

Yep, he had to die... he died in the film *raises eyebrow*. Also, as someone said on the message board for the film, it just finishes it in the way that was intended; this 'production' was never meant to show the first world war in a positive light.

Paul definitely had to die... what did he have to return home to? He tried going home during his times of leave but realized that the world was too changed... not really the world... but HE was changed because of what he had seen and experienced. That was one of the biggest messages - that men who fight in war are so drastically changed... how do the cope with what we at home consider to be a "normal life" after all the horror they have seen? I feel that, had Paul lived, he would have committed suicide eventually... I highly doubt he would have found peace in anything else except death. BUT... that's only my opinion. Good question - it made me think and consider how I feel it would turn out had he not died in the war. :D
shareLet's not be too fatalistic. Remember, All Quiet on the Western Front is largely autobiographical. Erich Maria Remarque is a pseudonym for the author. He was born Erich Paul Remark. His mother's maiden name: Baumer.
Though Remarque was obviously greatly affected by the war, he didn't kill himself. He lived to the age of 72.
It's also part of the novel.
sharePaul had to die. The point of the book was to show how usless and horrible the war was, so to make a point, they had to make paul die in the end to show war does not have a hapy ending. The original movie was based on the book, which was actually called "nothing new on the western front", because to the generals and nation, pauls death was not important, and was just "another soldier", and therfore when he died, nothing new happened.
