Remake to release in 2009--

In reference to an earlier post, I recently read that this film is being remade. The project has now been listed on IMDb though there isn't any information other than the screenwriter. The article that I read didn't bode too well for my expectations...as they mentioned it being a "modern rendition." I have no idea what that is, but I really hope they don't stray too far from Remarque's original work.

Worst of all, the film is listed as a PG-13 production, which means that they filmmakers won't be showing the true nightmarish horrors of WWI trench warfare. I think that if they are planning on making a film of one of the most well-respected books of modern warfare, they should at least do it full justice and show the horrendous conditions described by Remarque. That's the only way people will learn more about that period of history. Toning it down or making more "commercially viable" will only dilute the story and the very message of the novel.

Making a remake of this movie with PG-13 is just unheard of! It will be an opposing abomination of what Remarque tried to tell people; war is UGLY and BAD, and it fecks people up, even if they survive it. Hell, "modern rendition", are they gonna make it into an epic tale of bravery, heroism and friendship set in Bagdad, or something? This makes me sick. Gotta hate commercialism some times..

If it's true, it won't be All quiet on the western front. Remarque wrote an anti-war book telling the story of a very bad war and that people got destroyed by it. Trying to tone down the destruction will not do the message any justice. Or, go to any website showing the horrors of war - because they never change.

AQOTWF PG-13?????? they'd better reconsider.

war is, by it's very nature, X-rated, and remarque's stories (AQOTHWF, the road home, the night in lisbon) portray this AMAZINGLY.

the character of paul even comments on the foulness of the soldier's language- are they even going to bowdlerize the soldier's language (one f-bomb per movie) to get the rating?????

hey, HEY, if you want a PG-13 rating, go remake 'mchale's navy', and leave this classic alone.

or are you planning to remake 'caddyshack' as a chainsaw/horror flic???

This version (the 1970s) is only a PG (in the UK...it means that anyone can watch it if an adult lets them) and it still shows the horrors of war rather realistically.

PG-13???
If anything, I would think a remake would be more bloody and gory.
Interesting, well I'll be eager to see how the re-make is. Although, I doubt PG-13 could really capture the essence of the novel.

its just pg , it wasn't that violent enough for an M rating.
But i reckon the remake will be gory. if its hollywoodedised.

PG-13? I hope not. That means more teen appeal comic book crap like "Flyboys".

In not in the interest of the USA (& it's allies) to make war look bad, they want fresh young men & woman to enlisting for glory etc. And yes, most war movies get some sort of government funding (tax breaks etc) &/or assistance (regular troops as extras etc). That's why 90% of the war movies ever made mask the horror & portray the glory.
