Richard Thomas, ideal as Paul Baumer?

I couldn't imagine a more appropriate casting.

Well, let's just say he made a better Paul Baumer than a Hank Williams, Jr.

reply

Definately not. Thomas is the most boring actors of all time.

As an actor I don't like Richard Thomas much, but I had no problem with him here, like I did in It(which as an overall mini-series is pretty decent despite the flaws)

@warge: Well, I think I don't agree with you, he's not that bad. I'm not a big fan of Richard Thomas but sometimes he really surprises me with his performance. He's definitely able to play more than just "nice" lukewarm characters like John Boy Walton!
Hm, when I look at your "Top 5"s in your signature I get the impression you're either rather young or have a ... well, "unique" taste in movies... sorry

I'm no huge fan of Richard Thomas. I suppose the only things I've seen him in was the classic TV series The Waltons as well as All Quiet on the Western Front. I never saw the original but I feel Thomas was perfect for this adaptation. When he goes crazy in the trench w/the French soldier he has mortally wounded...I no longer imagined I was watching "John-boy" at war but could sense a connection to the character of Paul Baumer at that very moment.

It was a good casting call. As 'John-Boy Walton' he forces us to confront the more elemental truths to this story, and his gradual emotional deterioration becomes that much more powerful an effect as a result. I also enjoyed the performances of Borgnine, Pleasance, and Holm, whom I thought had been equally well-cast for this film.
