Director's Cut vs Theatrical Cut

I haven't watched the Alien movies in years and would like to re-watch all of them in the coming months to get ready for Covenant. The extended cuts of the sequels are obvious improvements, but which is a better cut of the original film?

I'd go theatrical cut and then watch the scene with Brett and Dallas being cocooned as a kind of bonus - not that much more was added to the DC really...

reply

Isn't the DC actually shorter? What did they cut out?

It's being discussed currently on another thread so I've just copied and pasted what someone else wrote:

prbronx5 replied 2 days agoSeveral scenes are cut, example, Dallas talk with MUTHR before the airshaft scene. Some are added: Transmission on the bridge. Kane pulls out a laser gun while in egg chamber. Lambert attacks Riley outside the infirmary. Adult alien dangling among the chains in the landing gear. This is during the Brett death scene. Parker and Ripley run into the landing gear room, as alien drags Brett up into the airshaft. The Dallas Brett coccoon scene. Alien slaps the cat carrying case with Jones inside.

The startup title sequence goes a lot faster. it feels like its at twice the framerate as do the initial flyover and hallway pan shots at the begining.

The TC, but there are very nice character beats in the DC. Personally I'd combine the TC and DC, but exclude the cocoon scene; not because it's bad, but much like the Burke cocoon scene in Aliens, it's good yet slows the final act a bit.

That and the cocoon scene is still considered non canincal.

I've only seen the theatrical cut. Need to give the directors cut a try next time I watch this.

reply

I enjoyed the theatrical cut of the picture because it is more polished than the director's cut

I liked the deleted cacoon scene but I don't consider int conanical. I really liked that they actually showed that the alien was hanging up in the landing gear when it came down to attack brett. As a child before I saw Aliens I always assumed it was upside down on the ceiling like a sipder and dropped down on a type of web.

That scene was iconic, that was my main memory of the film.
It didnt seem the same watching the DC last night

reply

The scene didn't seem the same cause they showed the full alien hanging before the attack you mean?

It was iconic for me cause I was still expecting an intelligent alien that would be able to speak instead of a wild animal at this point. At the time I was watching the movie I wasn't aware it was a horror movie dispite the chest buster scene.

The theatrical cut has better tension, while the DC seems to only to satisfy the curiosity of those who wanted to see the deleted scenes, but having them in the final version definitely makes the pace a wee bit more muddled imho.

"Any version with the original color timing is best."

Are you joking or are you simply a FUCKING retard?

Because this is horseshit. Sometimes a thetrical version exist simply because the producers and the directors had some disagreement. So, often the director's cut IS the real vision that the director had. If you disagree with that, you are dumb as fuck.

The original theatrical cut is Ridley Scott's preferred cut.

The DC is worth a watch too, if you are a big fan of the movie. There's a few new scenes that give you a little more insight into the characters and whatnot.
