Coming to Blu Ray, but...

there is a hitch...

"1941" is FINALLY coming to Blu Ray in October, but it is part of a box set entitled "Steven Spielberg Director's Collection Blu-ray."

This set features movies Mr. Spielberg did for Universal Studios.

The set includes "Duel," "Sugarland Express" and "Always" as well as "1941" -- all of which have not been released on Blu Ray prior to this.

The set also includes "Jaws," "E.T.," "Jurassic Park" and "The Lost World."

Right now, there is no news on whether "Duel," "Sugarland Express," "Always" and "1941" will get individual Blu Ray releases or if the only way to get them is through this box set release.

The fact they are releasing "1941" on Blu Ray is progress. I hope we will get to a point where we will get an individual release.

Well, they released the movies in the Universal Classic Monsters Blu-ray box set as standalone releases, staggering the release dates of the films in doing so.

If Universal follows that as an example, we might be seeing the release of 1941 as a stand alone release as early as June to as late as September.

Why do they say things are a dime a dozen
when a dozen eggs costs a $1.89.

I now have this movie on Blu-ray.

The picture quality is vastly improved over the DVD release, which was only 640x480 and highly compressed and the sound quality has been improved slightly but is still lacking. It has been separated for 5.1 but I am unable to provide an assessment because I haven't got a 5.1 system to test in on. There is a waiver at the head of the movie which explains what could and could not be fixed in the restoration.

The Blu-ray has both the extended version and the theatrical version, there being about 27 minutes difference between the two. It also has a feature length "making of" featuring interviews with Spielberg, John Milius, Bob Gale and Robet Zemekis.

While the transfer is not in the same class as Lawrence of Arabia (pretty much the benchmark for Blu-ray transfers), it is a very significant improvement on what was an appalling DVD.
