Sure, it's no "Schindler's List", but I don't even try to judge this movie on the same level with Spielberg's other masterpieces. I judge it for what it is, a funny, silly, ensemble comedy, with some great scenes (come on, you've got to admit it, there are some classic scenes in this movie!). It's lighthearted, and a nice period piece, and whenever I catch it while flipping around the dial, I have to sit and watch the whole thing.

So it's good that "1941," while extremely politically incorrect (and probably historically inaccurate), is something fun to watch even at the behemoth running time (for a slapstick comedy, anyway) of 146 minutes. It was definitely better than "E.T." All right-- cue the censures....

shareYou're not alone, Katrina, I saw it in the theater in it's original release (before we knew who the heck Spielberg was) and thought, and still think, that it's one of the best films ever. Maybe its the generation. My wife, 6 years younger, doesn't see much in it.

I'm 29 and think that this movie is hilarious! I also agree that it needs a UK dvd release. Its treatment by critics has indeed been grossly unfair, it truly is a brilliant film that does exactly what it says on the tin!

I'll interpret this sentence as inquiring as to weather or not I'd "heard" of Jaws or Close Encounters... yes, of course I had, but Spielberg was hardly the big name he is now, even after those two films.

Watching it now it is easy to imagine what a crazy production it must have been. There a still loads of laughs, especially the physical stuff and the fact that it gets more chaotic and OTT as the film goes on makes it still worth watching.
The escalating preposterousness of Con-Air reminding me of 1941 when I first saw that movie.
1941 is a personal favorite of mine, but looking at it objectively I couldn't say it's a good film.
Roger Ebert said once that comedies, regardless of quality, come down to a simple subjective question: does it make you laugh? The majority of people I've ever run across commenting on this movie said "no". I believe the humor in 1941 is the kind of askew comedy that appeals to a limited audience. I'm happy to be among that audience. It usually makes for enjoyably amusing asides in dramas, thrillers, and adventures...try to fill a whole movie with it, and most will find it empty.
I think this movie is very underrated. I mean sure, some of the jokes in the movie don't work but the movie is very entertaining with some spectacular action sequences and the characters are fun to watch. The movie also has beautiful cinematography.

shareI think the theatratical cut on VHS is ok, 3 out of 5, but the extended cut on DVD is the version I like the most, 4 out of 5. Sure there are things that don't work, but there are too many things that do work and I love it when it comes together. This is one of my favorite comedies of all time.

This movie grabbed my attention when I was kid and has never let go. It's got it all: slapstick comedy, AIRPLANES!, that Spielberg soft focus feel, Belushi and Ackroyd, AIRPLANES!, Wendi Jo Sperber, Frank McRae, girls in garters and curls, John Williams' score, etc.
Some of the deleted scenes got shoe-horned into the dvd release, others work really well. I liked the scene with the tank crew running through Lulubelle's engine start procedure (accurate, of course) being tucked in right before Loomis going through his checklist in the twin with Donna.
No need to apologize. It's a fantastic movie with an absolutely amazing cast. Watching it for the first time in probably 12 years. Good stuff. How can anything with Toshiro Mifune not be great?!?

This was probably the crudest part of the film also, though still enjoyable to watch these 2 attractive actors get it on together. However, their plot point led to the awesome Belushi fighter plane attack over the streets of Hollywood.
