Amazing cinemetography!

I'm amazed at the dance sequence and the big brawl! Beautifully shot and so much fun! Thats all this movie really is, fun! Its funny, well made, and has great action scenes! The rating is in my opinion way too low!

Agreed! I've always loved this flick. It hss a little bit of everything, and is really funny. Plus it's full of 'hey, it's that guy!' actors.

Spielberg's shot composition and staging of his sequences is top class and the lighting and camera movement is superb. The first amazing shot for me, was when the young Japanese sailor was going back into the sub and the camera is underneath his front as he's going down the rungs, then he stops and his head is right in the middle of the frame under his chin and he slowly tilts his face up to reveal the naked woman on top of the periscope..."wow"! William A. Fraker—who was allegedly fired before shooting wrapped and was replaced by Frank Stanley—received an Oscar nod and deservedly so. How much of the film is his, I couldn't say.

A LOT of the lighting looks like it might be his -- he does the same thing in WarGames; it's very evocative of Geoffrey Unsworth, if you know what I'm talking about.
