We were supposed to feel sorry for Audrey because she's lost her stately home. Yet in 1979 people all over Britain were losing their homes as the direct result of Tory policies. At least Audrey's still got a butler and a gardener. No wonder they loved this in America. It played up to the stereotypical view of the British as either toffs or serfs. And it wasn't particularly funny either.
Actually, To The Manor Born was loved in America because the dialogue was witty and Penelope Keith & Peter Bowles were the classiest couple to hit the tube since Steed & Mrs. Peel in The Avengers.
