OK. I'm trying to identify an anime-style cartoon I saw when I was very young in the late 70's. I think Star Blazers may have been it.
Did it (or were there episodes) that centered on a young boy whose father had been killed for sport by a villain who the son eventually fights? The boy's weapon was a pistol in a holster w/ a leg-strap. These are the only details I remember from a cartoon I've been trying to identify for 25 years. Please Help!!

You are describing the first Galaxy Express 999 movie (although it was the young hero's mother who was murdered, not his missing father). Space pirate Captain Harlock is also in this (renamed "Captain Warlock" in the Roger Corman dub--which shortened the title to Galaxy Express--and sounding a lot like John Wayne).
