Benderspink and producer Josh C. Kline are teaming to adapt the classic Japanese anime "Star Blazers" into a live-action feature says The Hollywood Reporter.

Known for its epic imagery and themes of brave sacrifice and respect for heroes lost in the line of duty, "Star Blazers" is the U.S. name for 1970s Japanese anime TV series "Space Battleship Yamato." It comprised three television series, five animated features and a host of merchandise. A live-action adaptation was set up at Walt Disney Studios in the 1990s.

The story is set in the 22nd century after an alien attack on Earth has forced survivors to live in underground cities. After a message arrives from a distant planet promising a cure for the proliferating surface radiation, Earth's last vestige of hope rests on the crew of a powerful yet untested spaceship, which must reach the purported new ally and return home before mankind ceases to exist.

Lets hope we get some amazing space battles on the silver screen....the only true space battle ever put of film is the one is Serenity...and thats a shame. There really needs to be more.

'Starblzers' would not be complete without epic space battles. But, as for "the only true space battle ever put on film," I admittedly have not seen 'Serenity'. Still, how can you discount the ones from the original 'Star Wars', the ones that made movie history?

Oh man if they screw this up one of my earliest childhood cartoon memories will be scarred for life :)

I'm just glad that Uwe Boll is tied up with video game titles, so he cant mess this up.

Ive got to find the DVD of this show.

Anyone know which US stores carry it?

Amazon stocks starblazers, all three series.

The subject comes up often enough.

They made the announcement years ago, and still nothing has come of it. Everything tied up in limbo, last I heard. Just too much crap to clear up before anything can get done. A case of too many cooks spoiling the broth, I think. I hope I'm wrong. imdb says it's in pre-production and 2010 is the target release year.

Thanks. I won't hold my breath ('cause, you know, I gotta breath). I guess we'll see what does or doesn't happen in 2010.

It's been in pre-production for 3-5 years with scripts floating around - with no Cpt Avatar and Wildstar leading the ship. Undoubtedly the plan is to sell the movie on it's "cast" of young hot actors rather than an actual good script and story.

reply

NOOOOOO!!!! The script is the thing..... Without a good story it would not be Star Blazes!

reply

What we need is a very rich fan, who is not himself an actor. Somebody who would, well, who would make the movie you or I would, if we had the money.

reply

Most movies are "pitch" movies and to pitch a movie you need a name actor. A star to attract the kids. It's a shame because they need Avatar so Wildstar has someone to rebel against.

reply

they could play up the horribly translated overdub of the original series.
it would be nice if they could do it up like the speed racer live adaptation.

the cartoon starblazers is better than speed racer BY A LONGSHOT.

Here is the proof and confirmation of a live-action film in development:
Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Battleship_Yamato_(live_action_film)
IMDb - http://us.imdb.com/title/tt1477109/

And finally, the official site: http://yamato-movie.net/

But, sadly, certain changes have been made that do not sit well (ALREADY!)...

The funny thing is I remember only a few episodes from this anime, it was so long ago...
