From roughly the same era, there was a show with 3 spaceship pilots whose ships could join together to make a giant fighting robot. Depending on which ship made the head, a different form of robot would be made. They had the cliche American "hot shot" pilot, a really skinny philosophical kind of guy, and the obligatory overweight brute of a guy.

Any help on what show that was?

OK, here's another one I can't remember, now that I'm thinking of these things. There was a spaceship shaped like a dragon. The dragon's head could come off and be repositioned so instead of a ship, it became a giant fighting robot. Any help with this one either?

I used to watch both of those on the old UHF dial on tv back in the late '70s early '80s.

That would be Voltron

No, thanks, though.

Voltron was closer to mid '80s and had the 5 kids. This was earlier than that.

This was just three ships. Its just one of those things that's going to bug me for awhile.

I think it was either Getter Robo or Mazinger. I too had memories of this elusive show from the 80's and had to download hours of anime torrents to find it.

I think you have put my mind at ease with Getter Robo for the three ships. I remember it a little differently. It was the late '70s, though.

After seeing your post, I went to youtube to check them both out. Mazinger, I don't think I'd ever seen that.

I believe you're thinking of Gaiking. It was part of the Force Five cartoon show. There were 4 other shows that were shown on different days. Gaiking was shown on Friday if I remember correctly. I hope this helps.
