I personally would love a live action version. I think you would have to split it up into 3 movies so it's not extremely rushed.

Do you link your own sausage???

I think at some point there was a live action one in the works...It was going to use the Arizona instead of the Yamato :|

I suspect its in development hell now.

Yes, it was none other than Walt Disney Studios that had the movie rights to Star Blazers. And according to what I've heard at cons, it would have been Star Blazers in name only. Among the changes,

Yamato/Argo would have been changed to Arizona. Understandable since U.S.S Arizona sunk at Pearl Harbor would have the same emotional connection as the Battleship Yamato to Japan. Just for different reasons. However, the spaceship Arizona was to be built from scratch in a secret base in Mt. Rushmore instead of Hawaii where the wreck of the real Arizona still rests. Sorta negates the whole reason for naming the ship Arizona in the first place, I think.

None of the Star Blazers names were going to be used except Nova, Desslock, and Gamilons (spelled and probably pronounced differently) and maybe Iscandar. Derek Wildstar would have been named Derek Wilder. The position of Captain Avatar would have been filled by some character named Rafe Korgen. And Nova was to have been Desslok's daughter and a Gamilon double agent?

According to what I've read about the script, it was filled with general Sci Fi Cliches such as Nova betraying Desslock in the end ("You Break my heart", this is really what Desslock was supposed to have said in the script. What other movie is that line from, I wonder? The name Corleone comes to mind.)

This is all based on the script that leaked out onto the net around 1996. This much said, it's probably a given that this movie thankfully will never be made. It was probably wishful thinking in the first place that Disney would realize that Star Blazers had a style of it's own that can't be compromised with Hollywood style commercialization. It is worth noting that Yoshinobu Nishizaki was (or preparing to) serving prison time during this nineties period so he would't have been involved. Neither would Leijii Matsumoto have been involved. That would have been a strike against it, not involving the two creators.

You know I was just thinking about this that it would be nice to create a "Live Action" version of Star Blazers. I would assume it would be best to keep the ship's name as Argo (assuming it is for the US TV audience) and keep a few of the main characters like Nova, Alex Wildstar, the original Captain of the Argo, etc. within the two hour pilot movie. This movie would establish the creation of the Space Ship Argo using help from an Alien source and the mission would be similar to the first animated season. A few things would be changed such as how they go about their mission, etc. thus after the movie, they could create a series similar to Star Trek but more on a military and defensive stance plus add in some exploration episodes here and there.

Would it be possible to take the design of the Space Ship Yamato/Argo and create a newer more space worthy ship yet still have a ship based from a battlecruiser sea-based design? What I am getting at is that we all will recognize the Yamato/Argo but it is similar to what the original TOS Enterprise looks compared to the first ST movie Enterprise.

As long as the people making it can resist the urge to prove how awesomely KEWL they are by crapping all over the original (see: Land of the Lost), I'd be all for a live-action series.

Live action is coming out this year. Just check out the trailer and tell me thats not beautiful. The good news is that they have most of the year to make the cgi look even better. The good thing is that Star Blazers and Space Battleship Yamato are identical in plot. So all you Star Blazers fans if you can stand the original names your in for a hell of a ride.
Me I am more a purist that I prefer Kodai to Derek Wildstar and Analyzer to IQ 9. However neither is a deal breaker for me. As long as the story is similiar then I am damn well excited to see the Live action film. For any of you luddites who havent seen the trailer, here it is.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNaJVoYup_c&feature=related

I've seen the live-action Yamato film five times now, and I must say I really enjoy it. There are definitely some changes, mostly in the nature of the Gamilons, but there are also loads of elements from the original. The original soundtrack is present, there are a great number of shots that are virtually identical, and Desslok even has the same voice (as the Japanese version, obviously). Clearly, this was a labor of love. Regrettably, there are no current plans for a US release, but there is an Australian DVD release slated for December, which will have English subtitles. Due to a clause in the contract for the actor playing Kodai, there will not be an English dubbed version, as he will not allow another actor to dub his performance. I don't find this problematic, as dubs of live-action films always look pretty unconvincing.

This is probably the closest to a live-action Star Blazers we'll ever get. It's not the nationally-treasured property over here like it is in Japan, and probably wouldn't see justice from a domestic production.
