How many of you
Watched this on TV '79-80? I did, and have been a big fan ever since.
shareProudly raises hand.
BTW, this was the first anime I ever saw that I knew was from Japan. I didn't know with Speed Racer, I didn't know with Battle of the Planets.

The subject comes up often enough.
Thanks. I couldn't, for the life of me, remember the name of "Battle of the Planets."
shareThe last show that I RAN home from school to watch.
"Only 74 more days..."
"Leave the gun, take the cannoli."
In my area, after the "after school run," they began running the show at 6 am. I got up every morning before anyone else in the house to watch it in the dark.
shareWow, that knocked the dust off of some long-thought-dead neurons! Yes, me too, every morning at 6:00am, before school. The only problem was that the episode where they actually used the Stellar DNA to save the Earth was on like right around Christmas and my grandmother was using my room, I was on the couch and slept through it. Absolutely NO ONE understood why I was so upset - especially during Christmas...

Oh, yes. I well remember Star Blazers and Battle of the Planets leading the second wave of anime to hit U.S. shores. I'm even old enough to remember the first wave, particularly Astroboy, Speed Racer, Marine Boy and Prince Planet (not to mention the live-action series Ultraman).

I, too, am old enough to remember Speed Racer being my favorite show as a child, (As well as the Batman series with Burt Ward and Adam West) though I never saw Astroboy.

Ah yes. Miss these shows. How about the one called Force Five?? Love those Shogun Worriors! Guiking (sp?), Dangaurd Ace, Grendizer! Great cartoons from a great time...My son now has to watch the most rediculous cartoons...
Not word up---just WORD.
that would be me. I watched it when I was 7 on the family film festival.I have been hooked on anime ever since.
shareI watched it and loved it! I never knew what it was called until recently- I saw a couple pictures on a retro-futurism site. I really remember the ship with smoke coming out of it, and the cool way of wearing the cloak over one shoulder. I remember it was very realistic for a cartoon.
I'm going to go look now for it on youtube.
Lifelong fan of this show since I was a kid growing up in the 80's.
Bought the DVDs and CDs and had the Yamato models. Had a few of the toys, and always kept them in pristine mint condition. Had to sell off pieces of my childhood to buy a house, but still got the memories. My own kids recognize the Yamato-Star Blazers music now and come running whenvever I pop in one of the DVDs. For a while there, I thought the only thing the next generation would have would have been the Star Blazers and Yamato DVDs, but now we've got the new Rebirth animated feature and the live action movie to look forward to. Can't wait!

This was my first anime. I'd seen Speed Racer but wasn't a must-see fan. Star Blazers was different. I've never been a morning person, but I HAD to get up early to watch. A local independent station would air it first thing in the morning. [ Remember when stations used to stop broadcasting at the end of the day? ] I got up early and "watched" the station logo until the show started. I was late to school a lot that year.
I totally wanted to name my daughter Nova when I was a kid.
*sigh* Those were the days

In the fall of '79, this used to come on at 3pm on WNEW-5 in NY, and I used to run home after school to watch it. I later found out that many of my male classmates were doing the same thing. I sang the first line of the theme song in gym class "We're off to outer space", and other classmates joined in with the rest of the song.
shareLove your story! I too used to get up early to watch the series.
When I first started dating my husband, and mentioned this as my favorite show growing up, he was able to recite the lyrics. That's when I knew he was a keeper. ;-)
