The two leads

Hi everyone

I'm new on this board and I really love Sapphire and Steel, it's so wonderful and eerie!

I just have a question? Does anyone know aht the relationship between Joanna Lumley and David McCallum was like? Did the hate or like each other?

It would be really interesting to know because on screen they both have such great chemistry together!

Thanks for any replies

Yeah I agree about David Collins, I read and article once and he was slagging off David like crazy! Saying how he use to interfere and made alterations to the script constantly! I read it as being jealously that he was second fiddle in the show when he wasn't the 'star'. He also seems to be convinced that there was a 'thing' between him and Joanna, I've only seen this come from David Collins though.

Thanks for all the interesting info about David M and Joanna I can't imagine Joanna smoking around that time especially from the look of her charecter!

Going slightly OT I always thought that there was something romantic between Sapphire and Steel at some point, especially from the way Sapphire tries to make Steel jealous all the time by hanging out with Silver alot and I also noticed the way Steel seemed embarassed when Lead mentioned Jet in the first episode.

Sorry I was rambling! Talking about it like it was a sappy romantic soap or something.

Thanks again for your reply

Glad I'm not the only one who saw it the same way! But their relationship was what made the series so great.

For me it was one of those situations were they were both too stubborn to admitt that they fancied each other (I'm talking about the charecters by the way!) I mean the only times they showed it were through the 'looks'they gave each other, when they kissed each other, and when Steel told Sapphire that he loved her and that was when she was possessed! I mean come on, is she really gonna be able to hear him say "I love you" (not those exact words but what he said practically means the same thing)when there's a force of absolute evil inhabiting you? I don't think so!!!!!!!

Going away from that, I really don't like the charecter of Silver he's so smarmy and self-assured!

Wow, I'm taking this series, way, way too seriously!!!!!!

About ten years ago, when Joanna Lumley was presenting 'Wogan' (a daily chat show that ran through the eighties and nineties in the UK, usually presented by Terry Wogan but with the occasional guest presenter when he was on holiday) she interviewed David McCallum and they seemed to get on really well. It was like watching two old friends catching up on past times, they seemed very comfortable and friendly with each other. They even said they'd like to do Sapphire and Steel again!
