Uncle Tom

You know I never understood how Uncle Tom worked at the firm.

he didnt really. but he used to get some briefs when rumpole joined number 3 equity court. by the time the show starts though he never gets any briefs he is just allowed to hang around the clarks room because he has been there for ever and no one can really tell him not to come into chambers anymore. On a side note he partly comes into chambers to avoid his sister who he lives with.

I just love the way he tell's his stories about his early days at the bar. Someone told me that in one book, Uncle Tom gets a percentage of everyone's briefs. If I was an old baily hack, i would be willing to give up some cash for a person like Uncle Tom.

The entire series was done with honour as our cousin's say, and class.
I often break up arguments with students in the university I teach in by
reciting. "My Lord, if my learned friend wants to give evidence perhaps Your Lordship would like him in the witness box!"

I think Uncle Tom was one of those little gems that make up the perfect ensemble cast. He especially shown at those parties in Chambers when he was asked to give "the speech". Mortimer did seem to write Uncle Tom as having a bias towards women and people of color joining Number 3 Equity Court - not sure what that was about, but I don't hold it against him.
