Ballard and Rumpole as Holmes + Watson?

If I could turn back the clock to the 70's I think Soapy Sam and Rumpole would have made a brillant pairing for a Sherlock Holmes remake. Leo McKern would have made an interesting Watson and I think Peter Blythe would have made a perfect Sherlock Holmes.

Any other ideas?

Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes in the Granada TV series was in my mind, the perfect Sherlock holmes. No one else comes close. Edward Hardwicke was his Watson, also perfect. 1984-1994 RIP Jeremy Brett
