I know they named him Freeway because they found him on the freeway. (my mother told me that, I'd never seen this show before and I am watching her dvd's) But in which episode is that stated? So far, I've watched all of season one, and I don't recall them stating the origin of his name, or telling a story about how they found him. Was I not paying attention, or is it in a later season?
"What Murder?" is at least one, and may be the only, episode that reveals that Jonathan and Jennifer named their dog "Freeway" because they found it on the freeway. In this episode Jonathan suffers from amnesia. "What Murder" is found in Season Two of the series.

I understand that Freeway ("Charlie" in real-life) was an unclipped Lowchen which means "little lion " in German, and the name comes from the traditional Löwchen clip with close-cut hindquarters and a full natural mane.
