Will Smith as Buck Rodgers???

Why not? He makes a mess of every other remake that comes out.

Buck Rogers (and even Superman) is a fictional character, so I think whoever can act the part should go with it.

Whites have been playing other nationalities for years, and playing characters that were initially other nationalities or ethnicities....(A lot characters in Asian-related adaptations that are Asian, are changed to white characters...)

Not too mention the nuBSG(Battlestar Galactica) has:

*Boomer (Now an Asian female, previously portrayed by a black male)
*Adama (Now an Hispanic male, previously portrayed by a white male)
*Starbuck(Now a white female, previously portrayed by a white male)

It shouldn't really matter the race (or gender actually), just if it is a good movie or not.

Will Smith as Buck Rogers? If he ACTED the part.

Will Smith tends to play Will Smith; if he adds something to the character I think it could work.

I think, generally, it would be difficult to market a film with a black guy named "Buck" unless it were done tongue-in-cheek.

I agree that he'd be great in the role, though.

Well, I think it's just like someone today trying to market a film based on Tyrone Power, with people assuming he is a "black" guy because of the name.(For those who are not familiar with the late actor).

I like the name Buck, especially as a fan of the character Buck Rogers.

Moreover, Sidney Poitier portrayed a character called "Buck" in a western he directed called "Buck and the Preacher."

If it's tongue and cheek, that would be silly. If people are going to harp on a black character portraying the character, obviously they have some racial issues.

As I mentioned above, whites are always changing Asian (usually the male) characters to white characters...but keeping the female roles Asian. (Hmmm...)

This was recently done with the adaptation of "Samurai Girl" I believe.

I personally don't see an issue, unless the script is horrible, the acting is horrible...

Daniel Craig was able to put his own brilliant spin on the James Bond character, which made me (a Connery fan) proud. Of course, his stories were a lot better than what we have been getting with the Bond franchise......

...the same should be done with the Rogers character.

Any actor who takes on the role (Will Smith, or whomever) should build upon what Buster Crabbe, and Gil Gerard did....(Again, I would hope they get a strong script and good director to work with)...

I like the name Buck too, but calling a white guy Buck and a black guy Buck are two vastly different things where I come from.

I understand the Sidney Poitier reference, but that was a very different time too. Fred Williamson made a movie called "The Legend of *beep* Charley" the same year. No way would that fly today.

I'm familiar with the reference towards blacks using the name "Buck" from slavery to the early 20th century....and in the context such as "that young buck."

However, I think it's harmless...especially as I wouldn't mind naming my son "Buck." (Although, I prefer the name Jeremiah).

Too, you have the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team...

Nothing wrong there.

And, too, you have to understand *beep* and "Buck" are two entirely different words (and I would rather be named "Buck" than that-other-word)....

I'm sure Denzel Washington, who is a fan of Sidney Poitier, wouldn't have a problem remaking a film called "Buck and the Preacher" today.

LOL! I didn't even think of that. Makes the name of Don Cheadle's character in Boogie Nights (i.e., Buck Swope) doubly ironic.

You haven't seen Wild Wild West I take it. Some roles identify too strongly with one ethnicity or another. You wouldn't want George Clooney playing Fred Sanford in a remake.

Maybe not, but the character of Fred Sanford (played by Redd Foxx) was based on the character of Albert Steptoe, played by Wilfrid Brambell... a white actor who starred in the British series "Steptoe and Son".

Ooo, baby, your domestic gross is SO BIG. That's how I know how GOOD you are!

reply

So what? Few Americans had ever heard of Steptoe and Son, so there was no inherent cultural identity to overcome.

Oh, I didn't realize that we only cared what Americans thought.

Will Smith as Buck Rogers? Might as well cast him as James West in a Wild Wild West re-imagining...

reply

I am not a fan of Will Smith, I never have been and I do not feel ashamed to admit that! I will admit however that I am a fan of the Gil Gerard version (Season 1 at any rate, I could never quite get in to season 2). I just can't seem to see Will Smith as Buck Rogers. It's nothing to do with him being black, it is to do with Will Smith always play Will Smith trying (unsuccessfully in most cases) to play a part. Maybe if he learnt to act and had a good script (and with any luck left the soundtrack alone) it might be just bearable. But if I was the producer Will Smith wouldn't be on my list of possibles.

I liked Will Smith in one thing; "Fresh Prince of Bel Air", and I didn't even like that show.

Will Smith can entertain, but I'm sick and goddamn tired of seeing his face put in films where he doesn't belong.

A Remake of the Karate Kid.....there is no more orgianl thinkers in Hollywood anymore. None! I hope somebody remakes one of his films in a crappy way, see if he likes it.

reply

Wow, this is a pretty racisit thread. I'm sure OP never intended for it to turn into this. Pitty.

Anyway, Will Smith is too old for the role. Whoever it is, should be in their late 20's to early 30's. And they shouldn't know any disco judo.

Well gentlemen, you are all wrong.
The new Buck Rogers is actually: Bobby Rice

Yeah, "Bobby Rice" has been cast as the new Buck Rogers for over a year. They can't get funding to finish the project that has been in development forever. As a matter of fact, the website they have isn't even up in running. Will Smith is closer to being Buck Rogers than Bobby Rice is.

Ohhh, a lesson in not changing history from "I'm my own grandpa".
