They attacked the compound before dawn??

I've often wondered about that. It must have been a day for night mix up. It doesn't make much sense as shot with the attackers not staying in cover as though they are protected by darkness, and most of the defenders sleeping in the barracks.

One would assume that soldiers would be up pretty early in the African heat.

There are different versions available, some in which the attack happens in darkness and some in which it is almost broad daylight.

All the Blu Ray releases have the dark version, the daylight version is available on US laserdisc, UK and Australian VHS and DVD.
