Movie about the times
There are many reviews written about how this movie really captured the themes the Vietnam war had left on people in the early 70's not only on those there but the home front as well.
What you see through all the characters is the disillusionment and cynicism w the war and the govts who supported it. John Converse becomes a drug dealer looking to exploit what had been an exploitive war, Marg dealing w his absence becomes a drug user and Ray Hicks vows to never be ordered around again by moron commanders like in the war which manifests in his private battle w the crooked CIA agents.
The 70s was the 'Me' generation after the community of the 60s generation to change the world fell apart and all the characters due to their self-interest and motivation now find themselves in situations of their own making.
The best line in the movie that most fittingly shows this is when Marg leaves the mountain top w the supposed heroine to deal w the agents after demanding to secure her husband and Ray assures her he will continue to cover and protect both of them.
After she leaves, Ray says ' She didnt even say good bye' which sums up their self interest perfectly.
