Thoughts on This Film

Last night's movie was Watership Down from 1978. This is said to have traumatized many children and no wonder. There are plenty of instances of animals scratching, biting, and ripping out each other's throats. The most upsetting part may have been when evil land developers bury poor little rabbits alive. It has great voice work by a talented cast and a lovely song by Art Garfunkel. The animation might have been better but is all right. Parents of sensitive children may want to avoid this one.

I understand why parents would be confused, but the cover is a good indicator that it might be worth a second look. I think Britain recently changed its rating for this to indicate that it might not be suitable for the average five year old who just wants to look at cute bunnies.

I love the story and have for decades. I’ve read the book three times, it’s one of my favorites. I saw it at around age six or seven and I don’t recall being disturbed.

BBC one made a very good TV mini series of it in 2018.
