Last night I watched the first part of it on Netflix before going to sleep -- the part up to when Ned Beatty is walking down into the subway followed by that guy. And you're right -- the first part of the movie is epic, especially with the breathtaking shots of Krypton and the farm. The musical score, especially at the beginning was stunning and unforgettable, some of John William's best.
Some of the moments and the humor might get lost on today's audiences. Like the first time Superman shows up in Metropolis and the guy dressed up like Huggy Bear says "Say, Jim -- that's a bad outfit!" would be seen as horrendously politically incorrect today but was funny back then.
Then when Superman shows up at the speedboat and a guy comes up behind and whacks him with the crowbar (failingly of course) and Superman says "Bad Vibrations?" that line packed a lot more zing in the late 70s.
It's too bad that this series of Superman movies went at least one too many: Superman IV was made partly by desperation by Christopher Reeve to get some work because he had been hampered by typecasting. Superman 3 was an interesting take on the character and is under-appreciated.
Superhero movies took an unfortunate turn with the 1989 Batman, because that's what started all the darkness and anti-hero stuff. And don't get me started on the 2006 reboot! Has that guy been in anything ever since?
