Gold watch at the end? Spoilers*

In the cafe he took out her gold watch like he was either going to leave it for her, or surprise her with it.. I love this film but don't agree with the ending.

The whole 2/3rd's of the movie is him devoting his time and love for her, then he throws it all away, saying he wants to get caught.
After we see the hell he goes through being locked up repeatably? The commentary doesnt help either the director often talks about other movies, or Hoffman talks about his personal drug problem at the time.

One thing the director admitted was there was revisions to the ending, so I guess they didn't stick to Bunkers original. Never a good move.

Still not as bad as the Thief's ending, but similar, portray a guy somewhat sane, for the whole movie, then announce him nuts in the end.
