Reikle's First Note

It has been a while since I've seen this film, but I remember in one of the opening scenes, there's a moment where Cullen (Gould) finds a note from the bank robber stating "There's a gun in my pocket, hand over the money" and matches the lettering style to the board carried by Santa Claus. This was before Reikle (Plummer) carried out the robbery, so how did Cullen get the note? Was it from a failed earlier attempt at robbery? I probably missed an earlier scene that explained how the first note got into Cullen's hands and allowed him to anticipate the robbery.

This is very late, but Cullen didn't find the actual original note. This is probably a verbose explanation but here goes:

Deposit slips, at least back then, had a carbon copy below the original (which I think the bank would keep), which the customer would keep (the carbon copy version) for their records (or something like that). Reikle wrote a note on a slip or piece of paper, but there was another complete slip underneath it that would still respond to any pressure put on it.

Cullen would sometimes use his finger to write some note on the top portion of these slips, which would not show what he was drawing since there was no pencil or ink, but the pressure would result in the drawing or message showing on the bottom. You see this when he draws something and later draws a heart, but when he removes the top portion, there is already a message there. Think of it as a cheap magic trick or game or something.

I think Reikle had written the note but didn't notice there was another slip below the one he was writing on. For some reason, Reikle aborted his first attempt to rob the bank, taking his note with him of course, but leaving the one below which was blank on the top, of course, but also had his message on the bottom, carbon copy portion.

Sorry, but I can't resist adding the quote from the film to this thread, as it still cracks me up:

“Gimmie the money, you fúcker.”
