How/where did you first see this?

I grew up in NYC, Queens, particularly. In NY, in the late 70's early 80's, every Saturday afternoon, Channel 5, before it became a Fox affiliate, would show a kung fu movie. They did this every weekend for many years without fail. My two brothers and I must have seen EVERY classic kung fu flick ever made- Master Killer, Five Deadly Venoms, Drunken Master, Golden Arm, etc. They became a part of our upbringing simply because they were available. I don't think we would know or care about them as much if they hadnt been shown.

Does anyone else have a similar experience, either here in NY, or anywhere else? I am curious to see how many people on the east coast were affected by channel five's programming choices back in the day.

I grew up in Southern California, which played these movies also. The Shaw Brothers studio sold the rights to a company which packaged them oftentimes as "Kung Fu Theater" which it was called for me. But in fact Master Killer first debuted on network television during primtime! It was complete and uncut and they issued warnings every commerical break.

This phenomenon had a curious effect. While in the Chinese speaking world, esp. HK, these movies disappeared and remained unavailable until recently, these films only existed in bootleg markets in inner cities.

I did the same. I've been wanting to get into Kung Fu movies for a while and figured this would be a good starting point. And, it was 9.99 +tax well spent.

I did the same thing. I went to walmart and picked this up for 10 bucks after I saw kill bill vol.2 and heard that person who played pai mai was the star of this movie so I decided to buy it since my local video rental place didn't have it.

I'm 18 and I live in Texas. My freind my sister and I were at Wal-Mart after a failed attempt to get into the Strangers. It was there for 9.00 and my friend who is a Kung-Fu buff told me that it is pretty much the best Kung-Fu movie ever. So I begged my sister to let me borrow 9.00. I watched it that night and finished it the next day and...ya....it was good.
