I just got the Dragon Dynasty/Weinstein Company/Genius Products DVD, and is the film’s original language Mandarin or Cantonese? The new DVD has both dialects available. Seriously, without looking at the listing, which is not always accurate, what is the film’s original language? I won’t watch it dubbed in English. Thanks very much. Peace.

36th Chamber is a bilingual release, meaning it was released in both Mandarin and Cantonese. My only explanation for DD including both is that they couln't decipher which was the "correct" language so they did us one better and just offered both Cantonese and Mandarin.

but at some point in the 70's the began creating cantonese tracks for their own domestic market (hong kong is cantonese-speaking).
though i understand some mandarin i prefer the cantonese tracks cuz it is "better" at expressing humor which is a major component of HK cinema.

Well I'm certain that it was filmed in Mandarin, if you know the difference and watch their lips carefully, all the actors were speaking Mandarin. But I'm not sure if the film was first released with the Cantonese dubbed or Mandarin.
