Any other films by the Shaw brothers you can recommend?
I have seen "Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan" and this one. Can you point out anything else?
Thanks.

If you can find a copy of it, check out 8 Diagram Pole Fighter (also titled Invincible Pole Fighter). It's really hard to come by, but it's my pesonal favorite Shaw Bros. flick. The last twenty minutes are incredible.
shareThanks, I'll check it out.
shareI've seen quite a few of their films, far from all of them though. :(
Check out Five shaolin masters, 2 Champions from Shaolin, 5 Deadly venoms, Disciples of the 36th chambers & Shaolin avengers...
Fists of the white lotus & 8 diagram pole fighter seem to get reccomended alot too. :) Yet to see them.
Also, check out:
"Two Champions from Shaolin"
"Chinese Super Ninja" (You can't get it widescreen right now)
"Return to the 36 Chambers" (the sequel, of course; not as good as the original, but still worth a look)
Note: the US video releases of all these films are total garbage, with substandard prints to boot. If you care about clean prints -- and Dolby 6.1 audio -- I have to recommend buying them from region 3. The problem is that the region 3 IVL discs don't have the english dubbed track, which obviously won't have you laughing as much. But, if the dubbed track isn't important... then go region 3.
All these discs are at www.hkflix.com
And, oh yeah, Chinese Super Ninjas will finally be released from Celestial Home Video in its original widescreen format in 2006. That's the one you want.
Is the DanHalsted that's on this board the producer?

Listen to djagility, these movies are all awesome. I don't think 8 Diagram Pole Fighters is as good as any of these. It's great to see 2 Champions of Shaolin after watching the 36 Chambers-triology! That's an old friend of ours taking on the Wu Tang Clan ;)
some of my favorite shaw movies
water margin
chinese super ninjas
one-armed swordsman
return of the one-armed swordsman
golden swallow
knight of knights
five deadly venoms
five shaolin masters
heroic ones
crippled avengers
new one-armed swordsman
sacred knives of vengeance
bells of death

The 8 Diagram Pole Fighter (AKA The Invincible Pole Fighter)
8 Diagram Pole Fighter (also titled Invincible Pole Fighter) is here:
http://www.hkflix.com/xq/asp/filmID.529958/qx/details.htm
I found 8 Diagram Pole Fighter uneven, which I'm sure had something to do with the chosen lead actor dying, and having to change the story around him. Not my favorite.
I'm a big advocate for Mad Monkey Kung Fu. And the 5 Deadly Venoms, of course.
This is from my review for this movie on imdb:
"Other films Lau made or helped choreograph that I recommend is: The Deadly Duo, The Heroic Ones, Shaolin Mantis, Mad Monkey Kungfu, Executioners of Death, Heroes Two, its sequel: Disciples of Death, Five Masters of Death, Shaolin Martial Arts, Legendary Weapons of Kungfu, 8 Diagram Pole Fighters, Disciples of Master Killer (Master Killer III) 1984/5, Legend of Drunken Master (Drunken Master II), etc. Many of the movies he is involved with are worth watching, at least for their action even if sometimes the plot lines are a little weak."
If you like the kung fu novel/epic you should see The Sentimental Swordsman, The Jade Tiger, The Magic Blade, Clans of Intrigue, its sequel: Legend of the Bat, all of which star Ti Lung, and Killer Clans
Also a good movie for seeing the essence of chinese martial arts (and close fighting) is of course Shaolin Martial Arts and The Master (aka 3 Evil Masters). Also Death Chambers is one of the many Shaolin movies.
Most of these should be available from celestial pictures now. If you live near a chinatown, get them from any of the video stores. The vcd's are only $10 each. The picture is obviously not as good, depending on your dvd player. some dvd players are better at playing vcd's than others. The reviews in the taiwanese press states that it is clearly more cost effective to buy the vcd's, considering that with the right dvd player the picture quality should be nearly as good.
there are so many good shaw brothers epics here are few I can think of:
1. CHINESE SUPER NINJAS
2. WATER MARGIN
3. NEW ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN
4. 5 MASTERS OF DEATH
5. INVINCIBLE POLE FIGHTER
6. KNIGHT OF KNIGHTS
7. AVENGING EAGLE
8. COME DRINK WITH ME
9. FIVE DEADLY VENOMS
10.FIVE FINGERS OF DEATH
Martial Arts:
The One Armed Swordsman trilogy.
Five Fingers of Death (King Boxer),
Shaolin Temple,
Executioners From Shaolin,
The Flying Guillotine 2,
Eight Diagram Pole Fighter.
Non-Martial Arts:
The Killer Snakes,
The Super Inframan,
Bamboo House of Dolls,
The Mighty Peking Man.
You forgot to mention Shaolin and Wu-tang.... it's awesome
shareShaolin Challenges Ninja (Thats what it is called in europe anyway)
Invincible Pole Fighter (Great!)
Legendary Weapons Of China (I think its called Legendary Weapons Of Kung fu in USA...)
I like the way there mouths move but no words come out and vice versa. Also check out ten magnificent killers from wu tang clan.
It's no use now. It's too late!

HUMAN LANTERNS is the best.
shareThere are very few Shaw Brothers martial arts films that I *wouldn't* recommend! Some of my favorites (apart from "Thirty-Sixth Chamber") are "Bells of Death", "Have Sword, Will Travel", "Blood Brothers", "Avenging Warriors of Shaolin", "Executioners from Shaolin", "Heroes of the East", and "Legendary Weapons of China".
shareSuprised that nobody's mentioned Dirty Ho. Classic.
shareAvenging Eagle is a must see.

I'm always on the lookout for new ones to watch but the best I've seen are 36 Chambers, Executioners from Shaolin and it's sequel Fists of the White Lotus (these both have Pai Mei for the villain) and Shaolin Challenges Ninja.
shareI recently bought both "The One-Armed Swordsman" and "Return of the One-Armed Swordsman". Both are fantastic; the first movie has great acting, beautiful sets and wonderful cinematography, and not to mention fun fight scenes. The sequel has some slightly goofier acting and a weaker plot, but all the action elements from the first are taken to the Nth degree, with a bodycount that would make Rambo blush and enough gore and bloodshed to send Quentin Tarontino running and crying to his Momma. I highly reccomend both.
If you are a 100% fan of Judas Priest, proudly copy this and make it your signature!
Try "Come Drink With Me" with Cheng Pei Pei when she was young and gorgeous, not the mean old lady in "Crouching Tiger and Hidden Dragon"
shareShe still didn't look too bad in CTHD and they tried to make her unattractive as possible since she was the antagonist.
Anysway, Delightful Forrest is one of the most underrated Shaw Brothers movies. Ti Lung just absolutely dominates. The final sword fight was so badass. This movie was one of the early Ti Lung flicks where HE was the star and there was no David Chiang in sight.
