I was 11 in '78 when this came out & I've always wondered why they didn't use Andy as Billy. He was also big at the time & had the looks & chops to pull this off. I was a huge Frampton fan at the time as I leaned towards harder rock over pop & disco. Frampton for me just doesn't fit...I'm still shocked to this day he chose to do this project!
shareI think the answer is a simple as going back and looking at the music charts from 1976 to 1978. As successful as Andy Gibb was, Peter Frampton ranked hire on the charts and had more hit singles. The producers must have figured it was a no-brainer that he'd sell more theater tickets.

At the time of filming, Andy was still promoting his first album in Europe, the collapse from exhaustion, his wife just had a daughter and they were going through a divorce. I think he was a bit busy and distracted as well.
Then, there was the cocaine....
He had a couple #1 hits on the US charts in early 1978, but he was still not "BIG" big yet- and by then, the Bee Gees had already done most of their recordings for the film already.
