Sven Nykvist

Pardon me while I steer the conversation away from child sexuality for a moment: Sven Nykvist's cinematography is absolutely stunning in this film. This feels like the cousin to Ingmar Bergman's "Fanny & Alexander": Plenty of beautifully framed scenes of people, architecture, furnishings and dolls.

Louis Malle did a superb job directing this film, but credit is also due to Sven Nykvist for producing a work of art with every shot.

Now you can go back to the hot-button conversations already in progress.

I found the whole movie to be something of a downer, but yeah, gorgeousness drips from the screen. This movie probably wouldn't be half as controversial as it is if it weren't so well made.

I found it a downer also – particularly the bidding sequence – but it felt true to the era in terms of style and presentation. Not that I know firsthand.
