I want to see this movie as it was on a list of most controversial of all time that i am trying to get through. I have read a little on here about it and am intrigued. I live in Britain and the mere thought of downloading a movie with such content puts me off. Is the movie worth a watch? Is the nudity art? Suggestions or thoughts?
Pretty Baby is legal in the United States. I wouldn't want to say for any other country, because I don't want to steer anybody wrong. I'm pretty sure the movie is on DVD, and you can check to see if Amazon UK has it. I'm guessing Amazon doesn't sell illegal DVDs. Note I said Amazon UK, not American Amazon.
I personally didn't find the nudity of Susan Sarandon or Brooke Shields objectionable, but I know that many did find that of Shields objectionable. This is because Shields was twelve years old. I know that some found her nudity erotic. I'm sure that if I had seen this movie when I was twelve or thirteen I probably would have found her the hottest babe I'd ever seen. A girl my age, naked!
But we're not twelve, and most of us won't find Violet to be a hottie. Instead, we will see that her casual nudity is perfectly reasonable for the part she is playing. So is Sarandon's for that matter.
I personally found this movie to be a bit of a downer. Not as horribly tear-jerking as some, but a bit of a downer. Then again, given the subject matter, how could it not be?
Still, I have to admit that it is well made, and Shields may have done her best acting in this movie.

Yes, 'Pretty Baby' is legal in Britain. I bought my copy at a store in London in 2008. The film has also been transmitted on UK network television several times over the years - and without cuts.
I also agree that Brooke Shields gave her finest performance in that movie. It's a pity that her career stalled in the 1980's. She and Jodie Foster were regarded as equals at the start of the decade, but by the end of it Brooke was totally eclipsed by Ms Foster. Sad really.
I think the main reason PB drummed up more controversy in the U.S. is because since it was widely released in U.S. theaters more Americans were aware of it than many other of the films of Louis Malle, which also contain child nudity.
But the other thing to remember is that PB was made in an era when and where the laws were alot different than they are today. So was society's overall attitude toward the subject of child nudity. Nowadays folks are in such a ball of confusion and paranoia that simple child nudity is enough to cause all sorts of alarms to go off and unnecessary investigations to begin. Maddness.
As far as the storyline of PB goes, I don't mind the nudity anywhere near I would mind the subject matter of a child being drawn into a world of prostitution and even being auctioned off for a night of sex to the highest bidder.
Other than that PB is a nicely filmed production. Malle managed to capture and deliver an ambience of the era that the story took place in. Something many period pieces sort of miss the boat on.
