Why would a successful businessman frequent a rat-infested brothel and take a whore with 2 bastard children as a wife? In that era no respectable person would have dared done so. It would have been bad for his business reputation and his relatives and friends would probably have turned their backs on him. This was not a realistic ending to the story. The title of this film was taken from the 1916 hit song Pretty Baby.

I thought the same thing at first, but all he had to do when he brought her back to St Louis was to say that she's a young widow whose husband died in WWI and no one would be the wiser.

Years ago an elderly friend told me that when he was 19 his mother died and a couple years later his father brought home a woman from a brothel in a distant city and married her. He had 2 more sons by her and they were quite happy.
