Is this film banned in America?

I notice that the 'Buy it at Amazon' button is greyed out, yet here in the UK it is widely available.
I was going to ask the same about 'Battle Royale' as well.

I don't know about Battle Royale, but here in the States Pretty Baby was shown on TCM last year... or was it the year before that?

Interesting point to ponder is that it seems that here in the U.S., new retail copies of Pretty Baby are not being released, at least at the time, and it doesn't look like PB will be re-released under any new packaging or marketing plan anytime soon, not even for a Blu-Ray release.

It looks as if PB isn't going to get the treatment it certainly deserves as a classic, as so many other classics have enjoyed. So, yeah, I believe PB has unfortunately been pulled from U.S. market.

But what about the UK, Australia and other countries outside of the U.S.? What's the current marketing scheme in those countries and are there any plans known about a Blu-Ray release?

reply

Our public library in Carmel, Indiana has the uncut DVD. I checked it out and watched it last night.

reply

I don't think Paramount printing the DVD anymore, but that's the case with most studio back catalogues at the moment. DVDs, sad as it is, are going out, and Blu-ray is in. The problem is that by the time they start to release these films on Blu-ray (which could take years), there will be some other up-and-coming format I'm sure. Luckily, I snagged a copy of this movie today at a used CD/DVD shop for 5 bucks. Totally worth it, especially since it's a difficult movie to find anyway.

reply

OK, forgive me for being ignorant, but what's the difference between Blu-Ray and DVD? They're both discs, right? So, aren't they the same thing? I'm sorry, I'm not a techie.

It's definitely not banned in the U.S. I've seen it on T.V. here many times. That TCM showing another poster mentioned is the full version too. TCM never edits any of their films. All films on that channel are always uncensored and without any commercials. Most of the arts channels here have sold out, but they still haven't. Bravo for instance, it use to be great, but now they edit parts of films to fit time slots and all that disgracefulness. It's a crime to chop up someones art in my view.

it should be banned

reply

Yes, because censorship is a good thing, moron.

We used to make sh-t in this country. Build sh-t. Now we put our hands in the next guys pocket.

reply

No, because Child Exploitation is illegal. And this movie is just that. Had they made it with an 18 year old who looked 12 wearing a sheer body suit to appear nude then it would be different. NO. they used an actual 12 year old. This movie is nothing more than a way for pedophiles to get their rocks off without going to jail.

And if you support it, you clearly are pedo too!

Are you sniffing glue? Have you even seen the film? This film would only bore pedophiles to death I'm sure. The film is very artsy and is not exploitative of the actresses at all. Maybe Brooke's language could be questioned in terms of maturity, but nothing else here is even questionable.

If you are against this film for pedophilia, you need to get out of the house once in a while and probably start worrying about yourself, rather than others. Get therapy.

Either that or you're just really stupid.

Why, because you don't like it? I don't like shoot 'em up movies with lots of blood because of the violence. I think it contributes to the desensitization of children to violence, making them potentially future serial killers. Do I have the right to demand that those movies be banned? No, I don't. Nor does anyone have the right to demand that this movie be banned. It's ART, not porn. It's not child porn either.

Besides TCM, Encore shows it. It's on right now, and there's been no editing.
