Children in whore houses

I watched this movie a long time ago, it was on TV tonight so I watched it again.

Was it common for children to live in the whore house? I know their mothers were there, obviously working. But did the kids just hang around and help with the babies and clean up after the ladies?

Also, there were a few other girls who looked young, not as young as Violet obviously but a few years older. So basically if your mother was a whore, then you'd go into that life as soon as the madam said it was time? The mothers didn't feel badly auctioning off their daughters virginity like that?

For gawd sake the piano man looked more concerned about her than her own mother.
