Why was there a black woman in the brothel?

The black maid said black & white don't mix, yet there is a black girl in the brothel...so basically are they saying that black boys/men can't sleep with white girls/women, but white men can have whatever they want?

I heard a really great podcast about Storyville. White men were allowed wherever they wanted, Black Men were not allowed to be customers in a brothel. They played music there, and that was about all. Interestingly, there were several Black Madams who ran brothels, which didn't service Black customers either.

Well there has always been the unspoken rule since slavery days that white men can have whatever woman he wants sexually. During the era of this movie, in New Orleans there were a lot of balls for white men to court and sleep with black woman in privacy. White women were and still are the most protected women, black women are not.

If she were of mixed heritage - using the old, now considered racist terminology - a "quadroon" or an "octoroon," she would be able to charge more.
