Three years late, I realize, but to answer your question on how the marriage took place? Those were the times. The mother had abandoned the girl, and she really didn't know how old she was, so while yes, she looked young, for all anyone knew, she could have been a young looking 16 (she wasn't, but no one but the mother who was not there, knew that). As such, she had people left and right vying that she was old enough to get married, so the pastor/preacher/whatever had no real reason to refuse to marry them. Hell, girls who are 16 today can get married so long as they have their parents' consent depending on what state they live in. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying it happened, and probably (for sixteen year olds and up with parents' consent) happens today.
People these days seem to have a real hard time discerning between today's societal values, and the values of yesteryear. Life today is NOT the same as what life was like over 80 years ago.
Hell, there was a time when the MOMENT a young girl got her first cycle, her father would seek out a husband (usually old enough to be her father) for her. That was considered normal. The girl could be as young as eleven. If that was when she got her first cycle, she was considered an adult from that moment on.
