Old Memories...

This film is remade and on it's way to spectatorship. How sad that is. It's definitely finding it's final re-introduction to society. I always thought that was what we would have had when it was released in 1999 on DVD. I know I got my copy then. Still have it too. I remember when this film was SO hard to find. It was only available on the Warner Home Video, and that was mostly for rental purposes. I would often catch the film on the Television, edited, but accessible. I caught another edited TV version taken from the 1999 DVD circa '04 or so. That was odd. More was edited out, but the condition was better than that of the former TV version. Before 1999, you were lucky if you caught the film at all, be it on TV, or if you ran across the VHS in an old rental place in the middle of nowhere. It was that rare at one point, but time has been kind to it in many ways. Almost too kind, when you consider how ridiculous it is that audiences seem to warrant it again, in the form of a remake, the biggest insult to films of it's kind. In 3-D no less! Just gimmicks and money-making. That's the biz though. It might be fun for audiences, but this guy isn't buying it. What should done, is a re-release on the big screen, so the film can be endured by the public again, the way it was intended. Oh well, I still have my memories, and that's enough for me.

Rant Over.

It definitely holds well, 30 + years later. I remember the Drive-In experience. It was playing at a drive-in twin. The opposite screen played Rabid. LOL. Then it made the midnight movie runs at a twin theater known as the FOX Twin. The Fox was originally a single screen movie house but...well, they all doubled , trippled, and quadrupled anyway. What the hell. It was a damn fine film that had such a strong and unusual way about it that made it as great as an A-List film. It saw it three times. Once in it's original run, and twice at the Midnight Movies. After that was when it was on VHS, and HARD to find. Like a needle in a haystack. Up From The Depths was easier to find then. Anyway, the cable version came about at the same time, I believe. So I taped it, lost that taped copy, and taped it again some time later, and that copy lasted until the DVD in 1999. I also had/have the original Varese soundtrack LP release as well, from 1979. I hate to boast, but my history goes on, so you can see where I am a little offended with a remake coming about the way it is. Oh well, that's the ridiculousness of the biz these days. A re-release would suit the film much better, and I don't just mean midnight movie either.

Thanks for putting up with my post.

I remember when TBS used to show the film once in a while. That was actually how I first saw it, back in 1991...on TV. It was very hard to catch indeed. Then IFC showed it a couple of times, in widescreen no less. That was weird. All the same, I bought the 1999 DVD too. A most prized possession indeed.

I first saw it, probably ten years ago (Give or take), renting the Warner Home Video from blockbuster of all places (!?!?). I was either a little younger or a little older than ten. I loved the movie then, and I love the movie now. I had no Idea the DVD got released when it did due to the fact that I did not own a computer then and was still pretty ignorant to stuff like that, and when I did become aware of it's existence in the digital format, I would always forget it and order others. But rest assured, I am ordering the new Shout! Factory DVD and I'm eagerly looking forward to reliving childhood memories.

I actually owned the old Warner Brothers VHS in an oversized clamshell box; I bought said tape used from a mom'n'pop rental outlet that was going out of business for a mere ten bucks. I just rewatched this movie on the new Shout! Factory DVD and boy does it hold up well. It's a really bright and energetic B-horror winner that delivers thrills and laughs in equal measure.
