Piranya? lol
How about the one guy who kept calling the fish piranya? I thought that was hysterical. I do really like this movie though. But that always cracked me up.

That is actually the proper pronunciation of the word. "Piranha" is a Portuguese word, and the "nh" in Portuguese makes a sound like the "ni" in the English words "senior" or "onion".
Another example: estranho [strange] (pronounced "es-TRAHN-yo")
I'm not fluent at all in Portuguese, but I happen to know this because a Brazilian friend of mine explained it to me. Interesting, no?

actually, it is pretty interesting. I took Spanish for years but I never knew much about the Portuguese language. I always thought it was funny whenever I heard that guy say "piranya". But I guess now that I know this, its not quite as funny. But thank you for clearing it up for me. Learn something new everyday.

If you study up on some Portuguese, you'll notice how similar it is to Spanish, especially the "nh" and "lh" combinations that sound like the Spanish "ñ" and "ll" (pronounced "e-ye"). Another sound you may become familiar with is the ei diphthong, which sounds like the English long a (as in "hate") sound. Example of a Portuguese name with the ei sound: Oliveira.
sharecool was going to ask if this was a U.S accent thing.

Our pronunciation is just the Americanized version of the original Portuguese. So basically, yes.
