Toga Party

In contrast to the comment in Trivia "Virtually unheard of, "Toga Parties" became all the rage in colleges all over America after the release of this film",there were toga parties in the early '60's. My brother got invited to a Rutgers University Toga Party by the guy up the street in 1963. I asked him what a toga party was and he told me that you dressed up in sheets. Being much younger than him I thought this was extremely silly! When this part of the movie showed up I laughed my *** off remembering him telling me he was going to one.

I think toga parties were popular in the '60s. This is based on the writers' college experiences at that time, so obviously they got the idea somewhere. I think what that trivia comment meant was that they had faded into obscurity by the late '70s. Now, of course, they are massively popular thanks to Animal House.

I pronounce you man and wife. Proceed with the execution.

I believe that they meant that toga parties were "virtually unheard of" in 1978 when this movie was released, not in 1962 when the movie was set. That's how I interpreted it. After the movie was released, Toga parties were all the rage on college campuses for years.

I can only speak for my generation. When my friends went to Daytona for Spring break in 1989, our entire small hotel had a toga party on our last night. MTV showed up at one point. It was a great all out bash. It helped that I had the soundtrack to Animal House on cassette with me along with my kick ass boom box. Recently, I went into google street view to see how the old hotel is doing. Its gone!! Its a empty lot. Guess one to many blow out parties..

OP -

Toga parties had arrived in the UK by the early 80's.

Cue endless embarrassment (for this woman, anyway)

And the movie was released in 1978. Might have been the MacDonald's effect. When I spent a year in London a few years after and still remember the line into the street for a Big Mac. I was more than happy with the Place listed on the chalk board at the fish n' chips place next door with no line.

Why wait til the weekend?? Make some interesting dinner conversation with the kiddies and the in-laws! Mow your grass in a toga, wave to the neighbors! Go and buy a magazine and a gallon of milk, show off that toga with pride, boy!!

There's just so many opportunities for fun, waiting for you!! I say, bring out the toga--bring on the fun!!

I didn't know I was dyslexic until I went to a toga party as a goat.

This post brought back great memories. Yes as others pointed out, toga parties were not well-known in 1978. By 1979 they were hugely popular. There was always something about dressing up in a toga that got us a young people drinking and dancing. It seemed that if you showed up to a college party in a toga your inhibitions were already down. Not to mention, it was a lot easier to get a girl out of a toga than blue jeans. What can I say.

I was in college in 1978. I'd never heard of a toga party before the movie came out.

I was in some toga parties in the early 80s mid 80s...it was just hilarious, goofy fun all around. It would seem really awkward today though.
