Mrs. Wormer to vacation in Saratoga Springs?

So shortly after Otter hooks up with her, there's an article in the paper saying that Mrs. Wormer is going to vacation in Saratoga Springs. The camera seems to dwell on this headline for a few seconds. Is there some meaning here? A joke?

"If this wasn't my son's wedding day, I'd knock your teeth out, you anti-Dentite bastard."

I've been wondering that for a while as well.

That is my least vulnerable spot.

I'm thinking it's a reference to her going away to a "Health Spa" aka. a detox center because of her drinking and odd behavior.

I never used to get that either. I finally asked someone about it, and they told me it shows that Mr. and Mrs. Wormer had split up.

reply

not sure, but i live in saratoga springs, so this caught my eye..
not much to actually see here, but nevertheless, the tourists flood in every august for track season. there's a lot of gambling, casinos, and then the other 'perk' of saratoga~ the springs, half of which are smelly and carbonated, the other half being just plain old tap water.
so, maybe mrs. wormer was being sent there to rejuvenate, but was actually indulging in the saratoga night life ;)
on another note, we also chant 'TOGA, TOGA, TOGA' at various pep rallies and sporting events :) hehehe

reply

If you look closely, it says "Sarasota" not "Saratoga"

It isn't a joke per se although it merits a chuckle. Otter has hooked up with Mrs. Wormer. Dean Wormer finds out about this from Otter and right afterwards we read about her "vacation". Obviously the Dean has sent his wife off to "dry out" so she can't be used as leverage by the Deltas.

The timelines between scenes is confusing at times. I always thought she went to dry out somewhere.

Another thing that's confusing is that we're led to believe Pinto didn't take advantage of the Grocery Girl at the toga party. On the football field, both claimed to have not done it before...but Pinto did say he kind of did it once, but he was drunk. The parade is the day after their meeting on the football field and Grocery Girl tells her father that Pinto was the boy who molested her last month and they HAVE to get married. What's up with that?

To me, the headline (and the dwell to make sure it's seen) is the director's way of telling us that Marion not only boned Otter, but the Dean became acutely aware of this (although not Otter necessarily). Shipping her out of the area was a direct result. Later, Otter throws a quick dig at the Dean when he confesses to a little drinking at their party and taking some advantage of their female guests (otter now winks at Wermer).

probably.

toga! toga! toga!

I thought one of the funniest scenes in the whole movie was after the frat party, when his wife is so loaded and laughing and rolling around on the bed, and puts her feet in his face while he's talking on the phone, then tumbles off the bed! He looks at her like, "wtf??". Mrs. Wormer -- the original cougar!

reply

I take it to mean she went out to a drying out clinic.

Its that man again!!
