His death was ruled a accident not a suicide, though there has been debate about it.

I saw an interview with Harold Ramis in an 'Animal House' documentary, and he said something like, and I am paraphrasing here, "Yeah, it was an accident; as soon as Doug found the right cliff, he 'accidentally' fell from it." Ramis implied it had something to do with "Caddyshack", the other classic Kenney co-wrote with him, not being received well critically, among other things, of course. Sad.
