Two similar movies but sorry revenge of the nerds is a better movie and more funny. Not saying animal house was bad I just think it is overrated

Were it not for the runaway success of 'Animal House', 'Revenge Of The Nerds' would never have been made, nor would a slew of other, later, similar films depicting heavily fictionalized accounts of american college campus life. As the ostensible progenitor of this dubious genre it may seem dated to some in 2015, but branding a film as 'overrated', even couched within a claimed 'opinion', is simply not reasonable, given its high critical praise and near-universal acclaim, nearly forty years after its release.

Movies most assuredly do not "get made regardless of the previous success of others." Everybody pitches movies based on similarity to successful predecessors, and if a movie bombs badly enough it can take out almost a whole genre.
As I said, we don't know, but I doubt Revenge of the Nerds would even have been written, much less produced, in a world in which Animal House didn't exist. I'm having a lot of trouble thinking of a comedy about college life released prior to Animal House that had anything at all like the same tone.
I happen to agree with the OP. I hadn't seen the whole movie AH until recently, but based on the bits and pieces I had seen didn't think it seemed as funny. I think the difference was that AH was more sophomoric and had more what I term 'potty jokes'. I just don't find bodily functions funny.
shareRevenge of the Nerds was produced in a wave of copycat college movies based on Animal House's success. Revenge of the Nerds was one of the better of this genre. Why the 6 year delay? The home video market heated up. People were suddenly buying these things called VCRs. Animal House was enjoying a newfound success on home video rental. This extended the wave of college and R-rated comedies in general through the 80s.

As a matter of fact I was about to start a post on here about how well the film has held up. I am not talking with any nostalgia sense either because I recently saw the film for the first time and thought it was hilarious. I think the fact that the film takes place actually 15 years before it was filmed keeps the film fresh since it is essentially a historical piece.
I agree. I saw this for the first time a few days ago and boy is it ever overrated. And I am not young, so nobody can give me the claim that I just don't like movies from back then. I rate this only a 6, which is still pretty good.
shareTotally agree. I hate Animal House, never found it funny and all the characters we're supposed to be rooting for are unredeemingly unlikable. Also Revenge of the Nerds has Bernie Casey in it. Case closed.

You're absolutely right that pretty much every Animal House character was unlikable. But they'd be the first to agree with you. Nerds on the other hand, you're supposed to think of them as the underdogs who succeed, when what they were peeping Toms, and in one case, a rapist.

While Revenge of the Nerds is a great comedy, it is not on the level of Animal House. Sure, the revenge the nerds got on the jocks was more outrageous and fruitful than the Deltas got on the Omegas. But that's only because it had AN as its mentor. In fact, AH laid out the template for ROTN.
