N stole our dates

What happened with white girls in the bar, did they get molested? Because till then I really got bored and irritate so turned off the TV and went to sleep.

reply

Sigh.. No, they girls didn't get molested. Why would you possibly think that? They seemed quite calm as they had to walk back home after the Delta's Stoogesque departure in the Lincoln. They were upset at the Delta's manners, but nothing more.

The brothers just wanted to scare them priviliged white boys a bit, but they likely just danced with the girls, gave them a drink, and sent them on their way.

By the way, you can say "Negroes." It isn't an "N" word.

I prefer not to...

Why not? It's the actual scientific name of the race. It's like Caucasian for whites. Overly PC much?

reply

" It's the actual scientific name of the race. It's like Caucasian for whites. "

There is nothing remotely scientific about either term and there is nothing scientific about "race" whatsoever. Humanity has a broad continuum, race isn't a scientific concept it is a socio-political one.

reply

Damn, I had just asked a question and I'm racist now. Why you people always take it so personal?

It is 1962.
And it was still considered "good sport" to drag an "African American" out of his car and beat him to death. Sorry but that is the truth.

This is just me and I may be wrong.
But if some black guys are seen driving around with white girls in the sixties They could easily find themselves hanging from a tree. Those were the times.

reply

In New Hampshire in 1962? No. That's wrong.

I don't know if the movie took place in New Hampshire, but it's at least obvious it wasn't in the deep south.

And, you know, there were interracial marriages in 1962. Maybe not a lot of them, but interracial couples lived together and even had children ... like that guy you might have heard of who eventually became president?

reply

Sorry, but I lived through those times.

Yes, interracial couples did exist. They existed in 1862. But even in the north it was not safe. Blacks were dragged out of their cars and beaten. Inter-racial couples were attacked.

Sad but true.

reply

Sorry, but you've changed what you're saying.

I lived through those times too, and your memory is faulty if you think anyone was lynched in the northern states during the '60s. There were fistfights occasionally (there are today), but even that wasn't the norm, or anything other than rare.

reply

I never said lynched.
In neighborhoods in my town, Blacks were dragged out of their cars and beaten. Not killed that I know of, but still it happened.
I personally know of an interracial couple, out on a date, that were almost shot.
They ran like hell to get away.

My memory is just fine, thank you.

Well now..
I would call that a climbing accident.
Not racial at all.

I'm from NH. If the Dexter Lake Club was in NH 1962, then all the black people IN NH in 1962 would have been in that club that night! Just saying. Which is to say, there were not very many African-Americans living in NH in the 1960s. The movie is supposed to take place in New England, but not necessarily NH. Miller was an alumnus of Dartmouth. However, Emily Dickinson College is an obvious riff on Mount Holyoke College, a prestigious women's college in South Hadley, Massachusetts. Emily Dickinson lived in Amherst, Mass., which is just up Route 116 from South Hadley. Otter introduces himself to Shelly as "Frank Lymon from Amherst." Thus Faber might have been a parody on Amherst College. Amherst College had fraternities in the sixties, but they were banned in the seventies.

reply

Did the black guys molest their dates?

No. They were being intentionally intimidating to the guys, but if you listen to the ladies as they walked home, they griped only about the Delta's, not the black guys that danced with them (or apparently did).

BTW: Read a newspaper or magazine from 1962 and you will see that the word Negro was common and proper.
