Stephen Stills

On the DVD, there's archival footage of a blues jam that took place after the show, consisting of a majority of the performers. Stephen Stills played bass. I'm wondering what he was even doing there? He didn't perform at all during the entire show, so how did he get on stage to jam?

My guess is that he was a non-performing guest at the show or an audience member, and they let him on stage to jam after the show.

Kristen, you look burnt...or dead.

He was there with Neil Young... and he wasn't playing bass, he played Robbie Robertson's guitar, filling in on third guitar after Clapton strolled off stage.

The bass player was Carl Radle, from Clapton's solo band and Derek & The Dominos, another one who didn't show up until "Jam #2".

The Band played one dozen songs to open the show. These songs were as follows:
"Up On Cripple Creek", "The Shape I'm In", "It Makes No Difference", "Life Is A Carnival", "This Wheel's On Fire", "The WS Walcott Medicine Show", "Georgia On My Mind", "Ophelia", "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Stage Fright" and "Rag Mama Rag". There were no guests except for John Simon (piano on "Georgia On My Mind").

After this, they took a break, then started bringing out guests non-stop. I'm fairly certain that all of the guests were as follows:

"Who Do You Love" - Ronnie Hawkins (lead vocal)
"Such A Night" - Mac Rebennack (lead vocal/piano)
"Down South in New Orleans" - Bobby Charles (lead vocal) and Mac Rebennack (guitar/vocal)
"Mystery Train" - Paul Butterfield (lead vocal/harmonica)
"Caldonia" - Muddy Waters (lead vocal), Pinetop Perkins (lead vocal/piano), Bob Margolin (guitar) and Paul Butterfield (harmonica)
"Mannish Boy" - Muddy Waters (lead vocal), Pinetop Perkins (piano), Bob Margolin (guitar) and Paul Butterfield (harmonica)
"All Our Past Times" - Eric Clapton (lead vocal/guitar)
"Further On Up The Road" - Eric Clapton (lead vocal/guitar)
"Helpless" - Neil Young (lead vocal/guitar/harmonica) and Joni Mitchell (vocal)
"Four Strong Winds" - Neil Young (lead vocal/guitar/harmonica)
"Coyote" - Joni Mitchell (lead vocal/guitar) and Mac Rebennack (congas)
"Shadows And Light" - Joni Mitchell (lead vocal/guitar)
"Furry Sings The Blues" - Joni Mitchell (lead vocal/guitar) and Neil Young (harmonica)
"Dry Your Eyes" - Neil Diamond (lead vocal/guitar) and Dennis St. John (drums)
"Tura Lura Lural (That's An Irish Lullaby)" - Van Morrison (lead vocal) and John Simon (piano)
"Caravan" - Van Morrison (lead vocal)
"Acadian Driftwood" - Neil Young and Joni Mitchell (vocal)

Here, The Band performed a handful of songs ("The Genetic Method/Chest Fever", "The Last Waltz/Evangeline" and "The Weight") without outside help. Then, they brought out the one guest everybody had been waiting for...

"Baby, Let Me Follow You Down" - Bob Dylan (lead vocal/guitar)
"Hazel" - Bob Dylan (lead vocal/guitar)
"I Don't Believe You" - Bob Dylan (lead vocal/guitar)
"Forever Young" - Bob Dylan (lead vocal/guitar)
"Baby, Let Me Follow You Down (reprise)" - Bob Dylan (lead vocal/guitar)
"I Shall Be Released" - Bob Dylan (lead vocal/guitar), Eric Clapton (guitar/vocal), Ringo Starr (drums), Paul Butterfield (harmonica) and Ron Wood (guitar) with backing vocals from the ensemble excepting Waters, Perkins and Margolin

The show was slated to end here, but Levon Helm and Ringo Starr started to beat on their drums, leading to the spontaneous jams.

"Instrumental Jam No. 1" - Neil Young, Eric Clapton and Ron Wood (guitar), Paul Butterfield (harmonica), Mac Rebennack (piano) and Ringo Starr (drums)

"Instrumental Jam No. 2" - Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Ron Wood and Stephen Stills (guitar), Carl Radle (bass), Paul Butterfield (harmonica), Mac Rebennack (piano/organ/synthesizer) and Ringo Starr (drums)

And The Band, having exhausted quite a bit of themselves over the previous few hours, ended the show with their rendition of the Motown chestnut "Don't Do It".

If you've got a question about The Band, Jan Hoiberg's semi-active site, http://theband.hiof.no, can easily answer it.
