How do the pods exactly work?
I understand that they make copies while they are asleep. However, what happens to the original copies exactly once the copy is fully formed?

I imagine pods would be the galactic equivalent of those plants that feed on insects. After a human has been drained of his mind, memories, life, all that's left is a crumbling husk.
I assume you mean the bodies? As the first replier said, the bodies turn into just a husk. Did you notice all the garbage trucks in the background throughout the movie - and the grayish matter they were disposing of? That's the husks.
shareYup, dried up husks of dust. The Pods basically speed up the normal decomposition process all living organisms go through after expiring.
I always thought that a cool sequel to the storyline would have a POD person who has somehow transferred some of his/her original humanity, and even though he/she is a transformed alien they somehow desire to experience the human experience of their former self.
I didn't care for The Invasion and it's lackluster resolution. It came across as a poorman's Night of the Living Dead where the undead regained their lives through some cheesy bio-scientific anecdote.
